Planet’s satellite imagery supports traditional ground-based methods for soil and crop condition assessments by providing information at a larger scale, while reducing costs, time, and labor.
The imagery contains information from areas of the electromagnetic spectrum outside of the range of human vision that can be used to indicate nitrogen status, crop vitality, and crop stress. these indicators can be mapped across the field and viewed from an agronomist’s desktop, rather than running intensive field sampling. This decreases the investment required to monitor fields and also provides additional information for an entire field, or set of fields, that has not been available in the past.

Combinations of the visible, near-infrared and the red-edge
bands (a unique spectral feature present in the RapidEye
optical system) can be used to efficiently map and display
different levels of crop variables, providing a basis for
managing fields according to
their homogeneity.
