FIRE SENTINEL is a web based system created for the management of Forest Fires. The system is able to localise “hot spots” using satellite data and to create a perimeter of the burnt area using a specific algorithm. The system uses MODIS data for the localization of fires which is done twice a day
The system produces risk maps based on: – an analysis of previous forest fires – the vegetation stress – the changes of the land cover – presence of roads or human activity – meteorological data
For creating the perimeter of the burnt areas high resolution satellite data at 1 meter or 0.60 centimetres are currently being used.
